Introducing Billy Lake, Sydney and Los Angeles based artist,
After completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the NAS, Billy’s practice centres on identity and the female form, explored through a raw and fearless lens of self expression.
Working across mixed media, she blends instinct with intention, using oil and spray paint to create works that feel spontaneous, expressive and emotionally charged.
Alongside her studio practice, Billy has contributed to a number of art restoration projects across public art spaces in Sydney.
Playful yet defiant, her work invites a reimagining of femininity, shaped through the artist’s own rites of passage.
This week, we welcome Billy Lake to Art Department Studio for her solo exhibition “Heaven Sent, Hell Bent”, curated by Claudia Lowe of @artclubatourhouse, on view @artdept_studio_ from 17-22 April.

ARTIST STATEMENT
“This collection brings together works from different stages of my life, each one a reflection of where I was at the time—emotionally, mentally, and creatively. They capture the shifts, the confusion, the growth. Looking at them now, they map a journey I didn’t always understand while I was in it. A journey of being lost, and slowly, finding myself.”
